OUR HISTORY

Alcan Builders is a 45 year Fairbanks-based general contractor, skilled at commercial and government projects ranging from $100k to $50M. We pride ourselves on providing outstanding customer satisfaction.

Our management and core staff has over 100 years of Alaskan construction experience. Alcan’s relatively small size allows us to be extremely efficient, thus able to quickly respond to changing conditions, yet we are able to effectively marshal sufficient resources to complete projects of significant magnitude.

Alcan Construction was originally founded in 1981 by Fred Johnson and Austin Smith as an Alaskan partnership, Jeff Alling joined the company slightly thereafter. Then, in 1984 the company incorporated and became Alcan Builders, Inc., with Fred, Austin, and Jeff being its corporate officers. With over 45 years of construction experience in interior Alaska, Alcan Builders continues to grow. Matt Brockman and Shane Malone became corporate officers in 2015 & 2016 respectively, and Jeff Alling remained the company’s President until his retirement in 2025.

Now, Shane Malone (President) and Matt Brockman (Secretary/Treasurer) continue Alcan’s long-standing tradition of taking on progressively more challenging projects. From rebuilding the Denali Princess Hotel in 44 days after a tragic fire in 1996, to being an integral part of the F-35 Bed Down Program at Eielson AFB where we successfully took on the design/build of a Satellite Dining Facility, and a fast-track design/build of an Aerospace Ground Equipment Facility as Eielson rapidly prepared to add 2 squadrons of F-35s (Stantec was the Design Team for both of the Eielson AFB projects).

Focusing on both Private Sector and Government commercial construction, we offer a wide range of services and have found that a “no job too small” attitude works best for us, and our customers. From hanging a single door, to remodeling the 66,000sf Noel Wien Library in Fairbanks, Alaska, we carry the same level of focus and attention to detail into projects of any magnitude.

Shane Malone
President

Shane began his construction career in 1999 as a laborer for a local Fairbanks remodeling contractor. Taking to the trade quickly, he elevated himself to carpenter status, honing his skills over the next 14 years. Shane take tremendous pride in his craft. Not only is Shane’s hands on work outstanding, he also enjoys collaborating with customers and developing long term working relationships.

Matt Brockman Secretary/Treasurer

Matt’s love of construction started at the age of 16 in the Architectural Drafting program at Mt Pleasant High School in his home state of Michigan. Shortly after high school, Matt moved to Fairbanks, AK where he continued free-lance drafting on the side while he worked at local lumber yards, eventually advancing into mill shop work constructing windows, doors, and counter tops. Shanda McAbee
Office/Account Manager

Shanda McAbee excels as our office manager and head of accounting. She pays strict attention to detail and works well with others. Shanda is a great asset to Alcan Builders, Inc. and we are glad to have her as part of our team.

Craig Sandine
Project Manager/ Estimator

Craig joined the Alcan Builders, Inc team with 20+ years’ experience working on DoD/Government projects, including Design-Build and Invitation for Bid MILCON projects ranging from $3.5 to $125 millon. Seasoned Quality Control Manager and Project Engineer with experience in USACE, Air Force/AFCEE and NAVFAC projects as well as past Project Manager experience on commercial and retail construction.

Megan Mechling
Project Coordinator

Megan is our Project Coordinator she provides support in many areas such as assisting with preparing proposals, maintaining current project documents, and providing CAD support for redlines and as-builts. Megan was first introduced to Computer Aided Drafting in middle school shop class where she fell in love with architecture and CAD. She continued pursuing studies in this field through high school and went on to obtain her certificate in Drafting Technologies from the University of Alaska Southeast Juneau in 2016.

Chris Rush
Project Manager/
Estimator

Chris is an alumni of the UAA Construction Management program, and a Project Management Professional with over a decade of experience working in construction project management. Chris enjoys working with all of the various project stakeholders, finding effective solutions to challenges that are encountered, and ensuring project goals are met.
